Nothing arborescent

An hypertextual course is an underground root system that attaches itself to other root systems and scatters in all directions.

Out in the air, there is nothing arborescent about it. Unlike an "arbre de connaissance" as Descartes would have said, there are not millions of roots growing into an orderly tree, but a million little underground proliferations. The simultaneous presence of heterogeneous space means that there is no hierarchized distance between one element and another; they are in the same territory, grafting ideas across continents irrespective of national boundaries. The course in the hypertextual setting, like Deleuze and Guattari's "book-machine", connects and assembles in movement, without necessarily losing or gaining anything and without giving more importance to one element over another.

Space between two posts

Hypertext navigation means not only traversing a space between two points in the narrative.

To Terry Harpold, it means as well electing to diverge from a predetermined course. The possibility that the reader may choose to digress from a path of the narrative, and remain within a field/terrain that is still identifiably that of the text she is reading, greatly complicates metaphors of intentional movement that may be applied to the act of reading.You might not get there, and something might happen to you along the way. The digressions of hypertexts are narrative instances of slippages in the fabric of language from which they are woven. The link serves not only to join the threads it associates, but also to circumscribe a place where the threads are divided from one another.

The link is where the narrative takes a turn around a place that is inaccessible because you can only encircle it.

Hypertextual course and loops

To know whether a course in a hypertext will halt, it is necessary to know whether recursive functions are involved in the choosen algorithm, which is still an unsolved mathematics problem to me.

Recursive functions and loops are equivalent in expression; any expression involving loops can be written using recursion, and vice versa. Thus the termination of recursive expressions are also undecidable in general. Most recursive expressions found in common usage (ie. not pathological) can be shown to terminate through various means, usually depending on the definition of the expression itself.

Horizontal matrices in hypertext

Hypertext theory as explored in hypertextual Solution develops through purposeful infralinking applied according to principles articulated in Huit Hypothèses.

For instance, we may consider concept adjacency and reach for near ideas related within that, which we may call horizontal matrix.

Concepts of such idea matrices are explored in the evolution of this writing. Variations on these formulations and other examples of hypertext theory and rationale are presented in works by others noted in metabole.net. I wish that I could link directly to any selected sections of other documents presented; we do not yet always have this capability.

Therefore, in much of this work, my purpose and design is to explicate possibilities now easily within our reach. If you are an expert, you may find yet another faithful tracing of familiar redundant paths. A beginner, such as I, may find some of the delight I share - in my subordination - with seminal thinkers in this nascence of hypertext (from Richard L. Mariconda, M.L.S.).

Diminishing text-based narrative

Hyperfiction challenges the reader not only by offering multiple paths through the text.

There may be multiple endings (or no endings at all); questions posed to the reader which, once answered, influence what the reader will encounter next; audiovisual attachments; navigable maps. In fact, as hyperfiction continues to develop, the greatest challenge to the reader may be the challenge of finding the text at all, as text-based narrative seems to diminish steadily in importance in relation to the visual and aural components of the fictions.
