Picture with words

We must reinforce our view by constantly referring words to pictures and pictures back to words.

Ebooks must contain illustrations of the subjects we describe, and of course readers are invited to go to the actual scenes themselves; but the theory holds good only for literal representations and requires the denial of subjective elements such as association and an independent faculty of imagination. The crux of aesthetics is the treatment of figurative representation; and here, as we will see, we hold that metaphors further enhance our perception of natural and spiritual powers.

Enframing is the point

As Derrida points out, the frame is also part of the picture (despite Kant's best efforts to the contrary).

At the gigantic, uncanny scale of the internet, electronic communication initiates countless points and movements, sliding over the representational scenery without being reduced to the sequence of its particularity. Still, electronic communication still has to sweep along all the bad old functions of metaphysical thinking for local uses. The pervasive proximity of electronic communication races beyond any phenomenology of things or texts. It is not even a matter of forms and contents - that fine old Platonic division - since internet-as-Enframing remains indifferent to what it transmits or represents, operating only according to what it could transmit or represent, which is everything and nothing. The most potent device of Enframing is literally the frame: the gesture of bracketing which makes something seen at the expense of everything else (G.Bennington).

Time Line

Does hypertextuality conflict with the time line?

What is the natural length of the electronic narrative experience? Is it measured in seconds, minutes, or days?

Is the Flash workspace a stage, a page, or a camera lens?

What is a photographic style of writing? When does text become a graphic?

What does the third dimension add? Is the sound track really useful?

Crux of hypertextual aesthetics

Over the spot

Within text, some links highlight a key phrase, others a verb, and many prefer the very literal, "for such-and-such an article go here," with the "here" being the blue, underlined, linking word. Still others prefer that links live within graphic elements: a picture, a drawing, a logo. Sometimes you don't know where a link is until you roll your mouse over the spot.

Like a film

Hypertext is not a new feature of print prose, but rather an entirely new medium.

Nevertheless, the development of hypertext bears some similarities to the development of film. A good comparison to the link is the cut (or the splice, depending on how you want to think of it). Like the cut, the link is one feature of a new medium that allows juxtapositions previously difficult if not impossible--and, unlike 3-D glasses, it is an essential component of the medium, not a gimmicky afterthought.
