iPhone's eBook offering

Jorge Pinto of PintoBooks weighs in on the iPhone's new eBook offering.

He says he's selling more eBooks for the iPhone than the Kindle (which may have something to do with the lower price).

Enjoyed reading Dan Frommer's article describing the iPhone as a viable challenger to the Kindle. As a small niche publisher with more that 50 titles in print (all copyright protected), I have been looking at ebooks for a long time. I try to get from my authors / agents electronic rights to use them at the right time.
I currently have 5 titles in Kindle and in the iPhone. Printed editions are between $15.95 and 19.95, in Kindle are $9.99 and in iPhone $5.99 and some in future titles $7.99.
Sales in iPhone have been great. If you are interested you can look for these titles in Apps or

Will the iPhone Kill the Kindle?

Good news today for Amazon: Citi analyst Mark Mahaney predicts that the Kindle ebook reader will hit $1 billion by 2010. Mahaney has revised upward his earlier predictions regarding the Kindle, and now thinks that by year’s end Amazon will have sold 378,000 of the $359 device and that it will account for 4% of the company’s sales next year. The Kindle, thinks Mahaney, will be Amazon’s iPod.

Mahaney is basing his estimates on the Kindle being a must-have gift his holiday and moving 150,000 units in Q4, a modest number considering holiday numbers of other hot consumer electronics devices in recent years. But as Silicon Alley Insider points out, the Kindle isn’t a 1:1 comparison to the iPod, since most people already had a library of music they could load onto their new MP3 player. With the Kindle, users must pay about $10 per book on top of the $359 price tag for the device itself. Even with game players, such as the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360, which Mahaney also used in his comparison, many people had libraries of games from older game players that were compatible with the new version.

What Amazon should worry about more than the higher barrier for entry, though, is that the iPhone and a potential Apple tablet could really be the ultimate eBook reader.
The iPhone Apps Store has a couple of free eBook reader apps (eReader and Stanza) that are already relatively popular, as well as a paid app (BookShelf). These apps support a number of eBook formats, like PDF, txt, Plucker, and PalmDoc. Even though the iPhone comes with a monthly fee, it also comes with a phone, a full web browser, and is a viable computing platform for a ton of other types of applications including games, which could overcome the total overall cost for many people.

And let’s not forget that there’s also the iPod Touch, which sells for less than the Kindle (8GB version).
Prior to the launch of the app platform, a pair of iPhone eBook web applications were raking in members, and given the large libraries at sites like eBooks.com, which sell books in PDF format, theoretically the same content available on the Kindle is available on the iPhone. If Jobs and company launch a larger form factor tablet later this year and manage to keep costs down (say, under $1000), then the Kindle could be in trouble.

Which would you rather have, a $359 eBook reader that just reads books and gets news and blog feeds? Or a $1000 tablet that can do anything your computer can do? (Of course, a low-ish cost tablet from Apple is a big if, but the $299 8GB iPod Touch already trumps the Kindle in everything but form factor — which may be a matter of personal preference).

Get Free eReader eBook Application with iPhone

iPhone and iPod Touch

Fictionwise, Inc. today announced the availability of its popular, free eReader eBook reading application for the Apple (News - Alert) iPhone and iPod Touch. Currently, users of the iPhone and iPod Touch can read almost 50,000 eBooks, including NY Times best sellers and titles from popular authors, large publishing houses, and fine independent publishers.



The eReader eBook application is the only one to support best selling eBooks on Apple devices. Some of the authors whose works are available include Stephen King, Mary Higgins Clark, Michael Crichton, Ann Rice, James Patterson, and Harlequin Romance.

The eReader application is available as a free download once the Apple devices are upgraded to the 2.0 operating system through iTunes 7.7. The Apple iPhone (News - Alert) 3G, which was recently released, is pre-installed with the 2.0 operating system. This means that eReader can be immediately downloaded to the new iPhone without the need for an upgrade. eReader can be found in the reference section of the Apple on-device application store or with a search for the keyword "ereader."

"The Apple iPhone and iPod touch devices make killer eBook reading platforms," stated Steve Pendergrast, co-founder of Fictionwise, Inc. "They have large screens compared to most PDAs, and those screens are sharp and clear. Battery life is solid at 6 to 8 hours, enough for reading nonstop on a typical coast to coast flight, for example. Wireless connectivity makes uploading eBook content a breeze."

The eReader application is available on more than 300 different handheld devices, and the iPhone and iPod Touch devices are expected to be among the most popular for reading eBooks. This is because the screen quality on the iPhone and iPod Touch is crisper, clearer, higher contrast, and includes a built-in backlight for easy reading in low light situations. They feature small form factors that fit easily into a shirt pocket and can be used for many purposes beyond reading eBooks. The touch screen interface renders it more natural and easier to use than a number of higher-priced dedicated reading devices.

"The value proposition for reading eBooks on the iPhone and iPod touch is far more compelling than the dedicated eBook reading devices," remarked Scott Pendergrast, co-founder of Fictionwise, Inc. "With eReader, your purchased content is not locked in to a single vendor's hardware. We have customers who bought eReader books eight or even ten years ago for other devices who are today reading those same eBooks on their iPhone or iPod touch without having to repurchase them in a new format. Our system protects our customer's investment in eBook content."

Iphone Reader

I read so many ebooks and I do it using the great reader application eReader.

I have over 350 books in my eReader bookshelf and was happy to hear from the Fictionwise founder that they would continue to develop versions of eReader for different platforms. You may recall that Fictionwise recently bought eReader from Motricity and it was good to hear that they intended to keep eReader growing in the future. Now that I'm tempted to pick up an iPhone 3G when it's released next month I began thinking that I would need a version of eReader to use for my ebooks. I feel pretty confident that the big screen of the iPhone would make for a sterling ebook reader but I'd need Fictionwise to pump out a version for that phone.

I reached out to the folks at Fictionwise and asked them if they plan on a version of eReader for the iPhone and this is what they said:

Apple released their SDK for iphone/itouch on March 6. We have two Mac development experts doing the work to make eReader function on the iphone/itouch right now. Apple will allow third party applications, like eReader, to be used by customers after the next iPhone/iTouch firmware

update which is currently estimated to be released on June 30 and we expect to be done with our porting work at about the same time.

However, there is also a wild card in that Apple must approve of each and every application released for iphone/itouch, and we are currently seeking information about what the criteria are to qualify. We will certainly support these devices if we possibly can and Apple allows it.

Exclusive reading

Among cultural studying people, there appears to be a marked decline in habits of solitary, exclusive reading.

They know less and less of literature by heart. They read against a musical background or in company. Almost instinctively, they resent the solipsism, the egotistical claims on space and silence implicit in the classic act of reading. They wish to shut no one out from the emphatic tide of their consciousness. Being something we can listen to personally yet share fully with others at the same moment and in the same place, Hypertext, far more than books, meets the present ideal of participatory response. It is not the 'dog-eared volume' we find in the walker's pocket, but the e-smartphone.
