Details, fragments and literature

The philosopher Lukacs grants that modernist texts can contain a great deal of realistic detail, but he argues that these details are intended not as representations of typical elements of reality but as mere allegorical stand-ins for abstract ideas:

"Modernist literature thus replaces concrete typicality with abstract particularity".

The consistently allegorical quality of modernist literature implies that, despite the importation of abundant and vivid details from contemporary life into modernist texts, those texts are not "about" contemporary reality at all but about some generalized abstract city with no genuine relevance to the concrete specifics of human life on the streets of any real city:

"Joyce uses Dublin, Kafka and Musil the Hapsburg Monarchy, as the locus of their masterpieces. But the locus they lovingly depict is little more than a backcloth; it is not basic to their artistic intention". (The idelogy of modernism)
