The principal form of exploitation in late capitalism is immaterial, rather than material. The most significant social production is opinions, ideas, and values and not things. In traditional capitalism, the means of production are appropriated, but in this new form of alienation, it is the power of judgement and decision. Everything must be seen as advancing ever more ahead, so that this power should never be limited or restrained. On the surface everything is permitted, and in comparison to other cultures and societies, we appear to possess limitless freedom to think, judge and decide. What opinion cannot be expressed? This freedom, however, is an illusion. For the condition of appearance, the mode of representation, what is commonly called today the media, ensures that what is represented loses all its powers of transformation and change. In fact, what this industry requires more than anything else is works that are at least on the surface shocking, revolutionary and original, but stripped of any power or force to change or transform society. Only from those works that produce noise, opinions, and sound bites can some kind of surplus value be extracted.
