Knowledge of truth

In Phaedrus, Plato insists that rhetoric must be accompanied with the knowledge of truth and supported by philosophy. What part does the knowledge of truth bring play in rhetoric?

According to Masami Kinoshita, rhetoric is a faculty by which one can make arguments that have the contrary conclusions. Socrates insists that one who has the knowledge of truth can make these arguments more subtly than one who does not. How does philosophy contribute to rhetoric? Philosophy is explained as dialektike which consists of sunagoge and diairesis. The former brings the clear definition of the topic and the consistent argument to the speeches, and the latter makes the definition more persuasive by referring it to the way things are divided. In short, Plato's philosophical rhetoric is the formal faculty which can make stronger persuasion than the orators's rhetoric. I suggest that in writing Phaedrus Plato came to recognize the need of rhetoric and developed the theoretical explanation of noble lie which he stated in Republic.
