Linear-hierarchical style


According to Nelson Hilton, what might seem at stake in an hypertext is logic, the tradition of method and validity in deductive reasoning which is associated with the line: line of argument, thread of discourse, chain of reasoning.

As Bolter observes:

... today all our major forms of nonfiction--the essay, the treatise, the report--are expected to be hierarchical in organization as they are linear in presentation. ... The point deserves emphasis: only the linear-hierarchical style of argument is permitted in orthodox writing today. And this orthodoxy is approved and built into our institutions of learning and research...
